Brooks, Phillips

Brooks, Phillips
(1835–93)
   Bishop and Poet.
Brooks was born in Boston, in the United States of America, and he was educated at Harvard University. After ordination in the American Episcopal Church, he served congregations first in Philadelphia and later back in Boston. He was consecrated Bishop of Boston in 1891. He was a famous preacher and was the author of Lectures on Preaching, which had originally been delivered to the students of Yale Divinity School. He was so well known that on a visit to England, he was invited to preach before Queen Victoria. He is chiefly remembered, however, for his much loved hymn, ‘O little town of Bethlehem’, which is sung regularly at Christmas throughout the Englishspeaking world.
